Welcome Autumn!
Autumn, a beautiful season! Time to color the trees - yellow, red and golden brown. 'Til hmppp... winter... But let's talk about this colorful season. If you are wondering what makes the trees change the color of their leaves, here's how: a leaf contains the following color pigments: green (chlorophyll); red, orange and yellow (carotenoid group of pigments); more yellow, red, and blue, purple, magenta by the group of pigments known as flavonoids. Chlorophyll is vastly produced during summer when we experience longer sunlight. This pigment reacts with light so the plants produce foods such as fruits and vegetables. Carotenoid and flavonoid pigments are still present, but are dominated by chlorophyll during summer time. When autumn sets in, daylight is shortened so that no enough chlorophyll is produced, until it is stopped. With the disappearance of chlorophyll, food production is halted. Carotenoid and flavonoid pigments now dominate... until the leaves will fall without enough energy to sustain itself hanging from a tree. And then winter...
Well, let's talk about autumn again. Such a beautiful weather. Such a nice season to decorate our home too. With the Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, etc coming, it's fun, fun, fun!
